Information Technology Exchange

Biomedical Research Institutions Information Technology Exchange

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
Cold Spring Harbor, New York

16–18 November 2001

GOALS OF THE MEETING

In fall of 2000, an informal survey was initiated by Dr. Robert Robbins of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center to determine if Cancer Centers and other Biomedical Research Institutes had common research computing structures and requirements. The survey was followed by a meeting at Fox Chase Cancer Center in April of 2001 to discuss the results of the survey. Attendees at the meeting were informatics directors and those responsible for research computing.

The goals of the meeting were to:

  • Establish personal contacts in research computing at biomedical research institutions

  • Identify and document common problems and interests

  • Seek opportunities for partnership/consortium activities

  • Identify common issues to be brought to the attention of government and other funding agencies

Naturally, the first order of business was to create a new acronym and BRIITE (Biomedical Research Institutions Information Technology Exchange) was chosen to note the emphasis on scientific computing vs. clinical informatics. By the end of the meeting, a consensus was reached that face-to-face meetings between Cancer Center IT Directors and others interested in scientific computation issues provide an extremely important opportunity to discuss and evaluate options and solutions to common problems. Thus, we are now planning a fall meeting to be held at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island, to begin on the evening of Friday November 16th and end after lunch on Sunday November 18th.

The meeting will follow-up on issues that came up at the initial BRITE meeting, and we will also hold sessions related to the new HIPAA requirements for data collection and storage.
