Research in a Regulated Environment

Biomedical Research Institutions Information Technology Exchange

Center for Computational Biology
University of Colorado at Denver
Denver, CO

17–19 May 2002

GOALS OF THE MEETING

The mission of BRIITE is to facilitate the effective use of information technology (IT) at biomedical research institutions. To this end, we bring together IT professionals and bioinformaticians so that we can
  • establish personal contacts, bringing together those responsible for research computing activities at biomedical research institutions,

  • identify and document common problems and interests,

  • seek opportunities for partnership / consortium activities, and

  • identify common issues that should be brought to the attention of home institutions, government, and other funding agencies.
BRIITE began as an ad hoc gathering of interested parties from cancer centers, but it has rapidly expanded into a larger, open activity. BRIITE meetings have a major session devoted to a particular theme and several other sessions devoted to the exchange of information technology insights and ideas among meeting participants.

The major-theme subject of this coming meeting is RESEARCH IN A REGULATED ENVIRONMENT. Regulation is now affecting almost all biomedical research, with major implications for the design of information systems. Does this new database need to be HIPAA compliant? How do we extend our specimen health-information website need IRB approval?

Come to the BRIITE meeting to learn what regulation means and will mean for your research institution and your information infrastructure. And, come to the BRIITE meeting to learn how your peers are addressing many other information technology challenges, ranging from A (array analysis) to Z (ZOPE and other open-source tools).
