IT Support for Multi-Institution Collaborative Research

Biomedical Research Institutions Information Technology Exchange

Salk Institute for Biological Studies
La Jolla, CA

2–4 November 2005

GOALS OF THE MEETING

Information technology plays an essential role in almost all biomedical research. Multi-institution collaborative research requires sophisticated IT infrastructure. No longer are researchers willing to accept simple ftp file transfer, basic remote log-ins, and lots of email as their IT support. Now there is an expectation of comprehensive distributed data grids, with full single sign-on authentication, all running seamlessly, but with enough security to calm even the most conservative IRB. We still have unresolved IT challenges within our organizations, but now we must also deal with requests for transparent multi-institution IT support. What to do? Can these new needs be met without compromising local security and functionality? This is the subject of the next BRIITE meeting.

IT Support for Multi-Institution Collaborative Research is the theme for the coming meeting. In our plenary sessions we will learn about some emerging technologies that support distributed collaborative computing and we will also hear from two communities that already have significant experience with providing IT support for multi-institutional collaborative research. Then, smaller, self-organizing working groups will convene to explore issues of mutual interest. We have already found possible interest in having groups convene around the following subjects: grid systems; distributed security; multi-site multimedia; wireless systems; developing informatics tools; and distributed access to clinical data: IRB challenges. Other topics will emerge at the meeting.
