Hermann Joseph Muller (or H. J. Muller) was an American geneticist, educator, and Nobel laureate best known for his work on the physiological and genetic effects of radiation (Mutagenesis) as well as his outspoken political beliefs. Muller frequently warned of the long-term dangers of radioactive fallout from nuclear war and nuclear testing, helping to raise public awareness in this area. At 16 he entered Columbia College. Beginning 1910, T. H. Morgan and his students established the foundations of modern genetics by demonstrating that genes were real - not theoretical - entities. Understanding the physical basis of heredity required an analysis of how genetic material is exchanged between paired chromosomes. This examination of the mechanisms of crossing over is a collection of papers that represent the doctoral dissertation of Muller, one of Morgan's students.
